History of Hotel Majestad – A Cultural Landmark in Barrio Amón, San José
Hotel Majestad is located in the heart of Barrio Amón, one of the most historic and culturally significant neighborhoods in San José, Costa Rica. The story of this area — and of the hotel itself — begins in the late 19th century with the vision of French coffee entrepreneur Amón Fasileau-Duplantier, founder and creator of Barrio Amón.
In 1892, Monsieur Amón proposed transforming his family’s coffee plantations into an elegant residential district inspired by European urban design. His project sought to reclaim land near the Torres River that had long suffered from flooding and poor sanitary conditions, giving rise to one of the first planned residential neighborhoods in Costa Rica’s capital.
The property that now houses Hotel Majestad was built during this formative period of national development, when coffee prosperity shaped the cultural and architectural identity of San José. Influenced by Belle Époque and European architectural styles, the building reflects the refined taste and ambition of the era’s coffee-growing elite.
Barrio Amón quickly became home to prominent families, diplomats, and intellectuals, establishing itself as a symbol of Costa Rica’s transition into modern urban life. Spacious homes, ornamental gardens, and European-inspired design defined the neighborhood, which today remains a living testimony to the country’s coffee heritage and cultural evolution.
Beyond urban development, Monsieur Amón also played a pioneering role in Costa Rica’s early electrical power production, contributing to the nation’s industrial and technological progress. His legacy endures not only in the streets of Barrio Amón but also in the historic architecture that continues to shape the district.
Today, Hotel Majestad preserves this rich historical legacy, offering guests the opportunity to stay in a heritage property deeply connected to the origins of Barrio Amón and the cultural history of Costa Rica. Surrounded by museums, art spaces, and historic landmarks, the hotel provides an authentic experience rooted in the country’s architectural and social heritage.

This is a charming boutique hotel run by a lovely couple and their young son. They went out of their way to make me feel welcome including me in their family’s breakfast. I feasted on Gallo Pinto with salami, sour cream and scrambled eggs, fresh fruit and juice, and yogurt with granola. They gave me great advice on where to go and to be careful in the city. I walked all around the city from here and felt perfectly safe. I recommend this hotel highly.Posted on Sandra GerberTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hotel Majestad was a wonderful place to stay, and I'm so happy we landed here after stepping off the plane from Minnesota, U.S. It's an architecturally beautiful 120+ year- old hotel, with gorgeously carved wood ceiling beams, hard-wood floors in rooms, marble columns and lobby floor, stained glass windows, and a charming outdoor garden with yellow roses. The rooms are equally charming and comfortable in all aspects. The host, Diego, goes above and beyond in graciousness and hospitality, even cooking a midnight repast for us when nearby cafes were closed. He strives to fulfill any request he can. A delicious cafe is around the corner for lunch and great espresso, with other cafes close by. It's a do-able walk or short Uber ride to sites in the Amon neighborhood including the central market and Central Park.Posted on Neni SalazarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The hotel is amazing and by far the nicest and most spacious I stayed in out the four I stayed in while in San Jose traveling. The hotel has an incredible vintage feel and the room spacious and incredibly clean. The bed insanely comfortable too. Short walk into town Amazing breakfast in the garden The staff don’t speak much English and I don’t speak much Spanish but despite that they went out their way to accommodate me and answer any questions I had via Google translate. Would definitely stay here againPosted on John ChoiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A beautiful hotel which opened its door a few months ago. This used to be the Villa Amón B&B. I believe the mansion was designed and built by a French mason, and served as the British Embassy in the 1950’s. This information was obtained from the real estate website when the mansion was previously sold. The house retained many of the original features: stained glass windows, beautiful hard wood floor with rich patina, solid wood furniture etc. TIPS: - many buildings in San José do not have house numbers. Instead they use only the avenue (Avenida) and street (Calle) number, and then reference to some landmark, which may or may not exist anymore. The hotel is at the southeast corner of Avenida 9 and Calle 3. The hotel entrance is on Calle 3. Good points: 1. We felt safe because guests have to ring the buzzer at the entrance to enter or leave the hotel. So be patient if the front desk staff stepped away for other errands. 2. Our suite was spacious with opening to a small patio by the hotel entrance. 3. Breakfast was simple with juice, coffee (milk heated), toast, fresh fruits, yoghurt and eggs freshly cooked to order. 4. The hostess (Liliana?) was very friendly and helpful. She even waited with us outside the hotel at 5 am in the morning while we were waiting for our Uber, to ensure that we got our ride to the airport safely. Areas of Improvement: 1. The wooden floor was beautiful but creaked loudly in some spots in the room. 2. The bathroom was roomy but could use some shelf space for guests' toiletteries. One thing I would like to mention is that, there was a very negative review about the hotel when it first opened because the staff did not speak English. When one travels to a foreign country please do not expect staff to speak your native language, unless it is a brand name hotel like the Marriott or Fairmont or Four Seasons. Be respectful.Posted on Kimberly Jo CoramTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We love this place. It is super clean and the staff is absolutely amazing. They are so nice and welcoming. They were constantly looking for ways to make your stay better. It is hard to put into words how amazing they were. They even let us keep a beer cold in the refrigerator. The breakfasts were wonderful and included fresh fruits, delicious coffee, juice, eggs, yogurt with granola and more often than not beans and rice. Our room is beautiful and beside a small courtyard where they care for some very old turtles. It is super close to the main square of downtown and very walkable. It is in an area that is being renovated and they have done a beautiful job. Highly recommended it.
